Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers among women in the U.S. Approximately 300,000 cases will be diagnosed this year alone. Last week, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) kicked off Breast Cancer Awareness Month with a special presentation at Industry bar in Huntington, NY.
CSHL Associate Professor Camila dos Santos was in the house for the latest installment of our Cocktails & Chromosomes series. The dos Santos lab studies how biological changes that occur during and after pregnancy may affect breast health. You might have heard that breastfeeding provides natural defenses against breast cancer. But how does this work? Why does pregnancy timing matter? And what does this mean for women’s health?
“We’re interested in a very specific aspect of breast cancer, which is prevention,” dos Santos says. Today, in honor of Metastatic Breast Cancer Awareness Day, we’re happy to present her talk to our audience across the world.
If you’re in the Huntington area, check out the next edition of Cocktails & Chromosomes later this month. CSHL Assistant Professor Arkarup Banerjee will discuss his work on “singing” mice. (Yes, you read that right.) Register now for the October 26 event.
