Important Updates for NIH-Funded Researchers: Public Access and Data Sharing Policies

The NIH Public Access Policy:

On April 30, 2025, the NIH Director announced that the effective date for the new NIH Public Access Policy would go into effect on July 1, 2025 instead of December 31, 2025. The CSHL Library can help NIH-funded researchers navigate this policy.

Overview of the Public Access Policy

  • All peer-reviewed publications that are the result of an NIH grant must be made publicly available in PubMed Central upon acceptance without an embargo.
  • To learn more, please visit our LibGuide on the NIH Federal Public Access Policy.

Scholarly Publication Public Access

Does the new policy apply to my grant or publication?

Who can help me with compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy for Scholarly Communications?

  • You can always reach out to the CSHL Science Informationist Katie McGuire, PhD (x6844, kmcguire@cshl.edu) to get assistance with making publications compliant with the policy.

The NIH Data Management & Sharing (DMS) Policy:

The 2023 NIH Data Management & Sharing (DMS) Policy, effective January 25, 2023, promotes the sharing of scientific data to accelerate biomedical research discovery, enable validation of results, and encourage data reuse for future studies.  Please visit our NIH DMS Policy LibGuide to learn more or check out the policy on the NIH Grants & Funding Website.

Who can help me with compliance with the NIH Data Management & Sharing Policy:

  • Please contact Jackie Gunther, PhD (x8825) if you are planning on submitting an NIH Grant that requires a Data Management & Sharing Plan. All plans must be reviewed by her before submitting the final plans to OSP.
