Five Decades of Nuclear Receptors: Physiology, Molecular Biology & Pharmacology

Five Decades of Nuclear Receptors: Physiology, Molecular Biology & Pharmacology will begin at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, April 15th, and conclude with lunch on Saturday, April 18th.

Nuclear receptors are protein molecules that mediate the effects of steroids, hormones, and other molecules by binding to DNA and affecting the expression of genes. They are of critical importance in physiology, development, and disease causation across organ systems and have become major targets for pharmacological intervention. The history of nuclear receptor research exemplifies the role of fundamental research in generating clinical advances.

The History of Science series at Cold Spring Harbor gathers multiple generations of scientists and historians to reflect on major developments in the biological sciences. Proceedings are recorded and preserved by the CSHL Archives, creating a lasting documentary resource for historians, scientists, journalists, teachers, and students.

Like its predecessors, this thirtieth meeting in the series will offer a rare opportunity to examine in depth the historical development of a field. Beyond recounting scientific milestones in nuclear receptor research, participants will examine the personal experiences, intellectual debates, collaborations, and rivalries that shaped the history of biology—stories that often remain absent from the published literature. The meeting will consider the broader consequences of these discoveries, their continuing impact on contemporary biology and medicine, and promising directions for future research.
