Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Professor and Cancer Center Director David Tuveson has announced the launch of the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) Cancer Centers Alliance. The new initiative will foster collaboration and innovation to advance lifesaving scientific discoveries. With Tuveson as the founding chair of the AACR group’s steering committee, CSHL’s Cancer Center takes a lead role in this crucial nationwide effort.
Tuveson outlined the AACR Cancer Centers Alliance’s initial plans in a Cancer Discovery article. In addition to its focus on translational research, the alliance will promote equity in patient care. This involves building partnerships with other cancer centers across the U.S. and with community-based health systems. Tuveson knows this work well through the CSHL-Northwell Health Affiliation.

“As cancer center directors, we are on the front lines of research and breakthroughs that benefit patients,” Tuveson says. “We are confident the AACR Cancer Centers Alliance will rapidly advance the goals of cancer research that we share with our nation and the world, such that more patients may avoid and survive cancer.”
National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated cancer centers like CSHL’s have been a driving force in cancer medicine for over 50 years. Since 1991, these institutions have contributed to a 33% drop in U.S. cancer deaths.
The AACR is the largest professional organization dedicated to cancer research and medicine. Tuveson served as AACR president from 2021-2022. He has led the CSHL Cancer Center since 2016.
