On May 4, the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) School of Biological Sciences (SBS) celebrated its 22nd commencement ceremony. The SBS conferred Doctor of Philosophy degrees on nine graduates and awarded James L. Manley, Ph.D., an honorary Doctor of Science degree.
“Now in its 26th year, the SBS is the most recent manifestation of CSHL’s synergy between outstanding research and innovative education,” says Director of Graduate Studies Zachary Lippman. “This year’s nine Ph.D. recipients have added to the body of knowledge that humanity relies on to find truths. We are confident that the many experiences they have had here, within and beyond science, will give them comfort and confidence to rise to the level of their greatest potential.”
Honorary degree recipient James L. Manley is a leader in the broad study of eukaryotic gene expression. His work has led to considerable insight into the complex mechanisms behind mRNA production in human cells. Manley is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
This year’s Winship Herr Award for Excellence in Teaching went to CSHL Professor Christopher Hammell. The award is conferred each year by first-year SBS students and named for the graduate school’s founding dean.
Since 1999, the SBS has enrolled 220 students and conferred 165 doctoral degrees. The Class of 2025 joins a distinguished group of alumni whose achievements include many prestigious fellowships and awards, and over 500 publications. To date, 48 SBS graduates have secured faculty positions at leading academic institutions around the world. Graduates have also moved on to influential roles across the private sector.
