The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) School of Biological Sciences has awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree to molecular biologist James L. Manley, Ph.D. The biologist is recognized for his work in eukaryotic gene expression, particularly in the areas of transcription and RNA splicing.
James L. Manley received a Bachelor of Science from Columbia University and a Ph.D. from Stony Brook University and conducted postdoctoral research at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He has been in the Department of Biological Sciences at Columbia University since 1980, serving as Chair from 1995 to 2001 and as the Julian Clarence Levi Professor of Life Sciences since 1995. Manley is a leader in the broad study of eukaryotic gene expression. His work over the course of several decades has provided considerable insight into the complex mechanisms essential for the regulated production of mRNAs in human cells.
Manley is a Fellow of the American Academy of Microbiology, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He is also an Einstein Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, a member of the National Academy of Sciences, and a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher.
