A piece of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment whirs into action. It’s the sound of discovery happening in real time at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL). CSHL’s Core Facilities are a driving force behind the Laboratory’s leading-edge cancer research. One facility at the center of numerous groundbreaking studies is the Single-Cell Biology Core.
Organs like the brain and heart are made up of billions of cells living and working together like a molecular “ecosystem.” Studying each individual cell is vital to understanding organ function and the origins of disease. Over the last decade, the single-cell field has rapidly grown in popularity. However, isolating and analyzing one cell out of billions remains a complicated puzzle. That’s where CSHL’s Single-Cell Biology Core comes into play. Part of the CSHL Cancer Center, this Shared Resource provides the expertise and technology scientists need to complete challenging experiments in single-cell biology.
“It’s a way of singling one voice out of the choir,” says Jonathan Preall, the founder and head of CSHL’s Single-Cell Core. “And that might be an actionable insight that would’ve been lost in the mix if you were to look at everything all at once.”
In this video, you’ll meet Preall as he works in the Single-Cell Biology Core. You’ll learn about the services this Shared Resource provides and their potential lab and clinical applications. You’ll also get a tour of the facility and a sneak peek at its newest piece of high-tech equipment. Press play to come with us as we go inside CSHL’s Single-Cell Biology Facility.
