A new fix for brain cancer?

“Anybody want to touch a brain?”

Glioblastoma is considered rare, but its symptoms are very familiar. Persistent headaches as well as changes in mood, personality, or mental abilities could all be signs of the disease. Spreading awareness about this deadly brain cancer is crucial. Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Professor Alea Mills must’ve had that in mind during her recent Cocktails & Chromosomes talk. She not only gave the crowd powerful insights into the epigenetic changes that drive glioblastoma growth and development. She gave them the opportunity to see a glioblastoma up close and personal.

Professor Mills’ research on glioblastoma has been published in Nature and featured on ABC. Her lab has partnered with brain surgeon John Boockvar (of Netflix’s Lennox Hill and Emergency NYC) as part of an affiliation with Northwell Health. They’re also working closely with CSHL’s Moses and Joshua-Tor labs to map the atomic structures of glioblastoma’s Achilles heel and develop new chemical compounds that can target it. The crowd at Ninnet & George’s got to hear about all of this. They also got to peer through the looking glass at real brain tissue used to make an organoid. Not bad for a Thursday evening!

Cocktails & Chromosomes returns on August 28. Register now for CSHL Professor Christopher Hammell’s talk, “Dog years decoded: A journey into animal aging.”
