Funding raised by the 2011 Long Island 2 Day Walk to Fight Breast Cancer will go towards Dr. Mikala Egeblad’s research on the effects of chemotherapy on tumor-promoting and tumor-inhibiting immune cells in breast cancer.
Cold Spring Harbor, NY — On August 10, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) and 17 other organizations received checks from funding raised by the 2011 Long Island 2 Day Walk to Fight Breast Cancer. Presenting the checks were Ginny Salerno, Executive Director, and Noreen Wohlgemuth, Treasurer, of LI2Day Walk.
This year, 385 walkers participated in the LI2Day Walk on June 11 and 12, which raised over $515,000. Walkers started from Smith Point Park in Shirley on Saturday morning and after walking 20 miles, camped overnight at Cathedral Pines in Middle Island. Over 500 volunteers assisted throughout the weekend. After completing the final 15 miles on Sunday morning, walkers were cheered on by friends, family, and nearly 150 breast cancer survivors as they arrived for the closing ceremony at Smith Point Park.
CSHL has received nearly $200,000 from the LI2Day Walk since 2004. This year’s donation of $28,000 will go towards Dr. Mikala Egeblad’s research on the effects of chemotherapy on tumor-promoting and tumor-inhibiting immune cells in breast cancer. Dr. Egeblad said her group is working hard at research aimed at identifying new targets for breast cancer therapy in the tumor microenvironment and that “the support we’ve received from our friends and neighbors at LI2Day over the past four years has been a huge help to our research.”
The LI2Day Walk was started in 2004 to raise awareness and funding for the fight against breast cancer on Long Island. 100% of the donations raised by participants in the Walk are distributed to beneficiary organizations on Long Island. See a full list of current beneficiaries.
