On September 16, spectators watched the dramatic conclusion of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) volleyball league’s 34th season. Year after year, teams dedicate a portion of their summer to competing for the coveted Tiernan Cup.
Over the decades it has become a tradition for the winning team to travel with Tiernan Cup around the globe. To date, the trophy has visited Australia, China, and California.
This year, team Happy Salmon, led by Assistant Director, Security Rob Gensel, and returning champions, team P.E. Revival, led by Assistant Professor Hannah Meyer and Scientific Administrator/Program Manager Caryn Koza, went head-to-head for the championship.

Ultimately, P.E. Revival took home the Tiernan Cup for the fourth time in five seasons, cementing themselves as a force of reckoning. “We love playing with all the teams,” says Koza. “Everyone has improved their game, and we all put in a lot of heart.”
When the sand settles and everyone heads home, one thing is certain: the annual volleyball league helps strengthen the bonds between CSHL students, staff, and faculty. Gensel, also commissioner of the league, shared, “For over three decades, it has brought all members of the Lab community together, from groundbreaking scientists to essential support staff. After all, where else can you say you’ve shared the court with Nobel laureates?”
