Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s (CSHL’s) Rohini Guin, an M.D.-Ph.D. candidate in the Janowitz lab, has been named president-elect of the American Physician Scientists Association (APSA), starting in May 2025.
Founded in 2003, the APSA is a national, student-led organization dedicated to addressing the needs of future physician-scientists. It aims to help all physician-scientist trainees realize their educational and professional goals. A dual commitment to clinical education and scientific discovery work presents a unique challenge. Therefore, mentorship, collegial support, and academic exchange are essential as physician-scientists develop their careers.
“I am excited to grow APSA’s footprint in the physician-scientist community, build our partnerships, and expand resources for prospective applicants,” Guin says. “Both science and health care are essential pillars of society. So, I also wish to support the topical issues to which APSA lends its voice. Discoveries led by M.D.-Ph.D. students contribute to innovation and advancement of evidence-based care for patients around the globe. It is imperative that our future health care leaders and innovators can develop their scholarship supported by a strong and collaborative community.”
The APSA offers students a platform to exchange knowledge and experience and provides access to mentorship. It maintains close relationships with the American Society for Clinical Investigation (ASCI), an honor society for established clinician-scientists, which recently elected Guin’s mentor, CSHL Associate Professor Tobias Janowitz, to its ranks.
“President of the APSA is an important position,” Janowitz says. “I congratulate Rohini on her election. And I’m particularly pleased that she and others in my lab are involved in physician-scientist-led discoveries.”
