7:00 pm: Cocktails & Chromosomes – A new epigenetic fix for brain cancer

Thursday, July 31, 2025

Scientific discovery profoundly shapes our world, and Dr. Alea Mills leads an exceptional international team committed to breakthroughs that benefit humanity.

Her work focuses on glioblastoma, the most common and aggressive form of brain cancer, where only about 5 out of 100 people with glioblastoma are alive 5 years after they get the news from their doctors; half of these patients live for just around a year. Dr. Mills and her team identified a novel target that, when depleted, can extend survival in nearly three quarters of cases. They uncovered that a rogue protein alters chromosome packaging, silencing the body's natural cancer defenses. Crucially, they found a way to switch this defense system back on, offering hope against this deadly disease.

Dr. Mills continues to advance these findings, with the goal of improving outcomes and quality of life for those affected by glioblastoma.

Note: CSHL does not provide food so please plan ahead.

Seating is limited and is first come, first serve. Standing room is available once the seats are filled. Reserving your ticket on Eventbrite does not guarantee you a seat at the event.

7:00 pm: Cocktails & Chromosomes – Dog Years Decoded: A Journey into Animal Aging

Thursday, August 28, 2025

Have you ever wondered why different animals grow and age at different rates?  Why do dogs mature faster and live only a fraction of our lifetimes? How would biology do that? Professor Chris Hammell will spend some time explaining how he uses simple model organisms to determine how the clock of life works.

Note: CSHL does not provide food so please plan ahead.
