Activity description:
Evolution is more than just natural selection—sometimes it happens by random chance! Genetic drift is a force of evolution that can cause some alleles to disappear from a population completely, whether or not they’re harmful. Join us to explore the impact of genetic drift on populations of different sizes!
In this activity, you will:
- model the role of genetic drift on populations of different sizes;
- explore extreme cases of genetic drift like founder and bottleneck effects; and
- discuss different mechanisms of evolution!
Participants need:
20 each of four different colors of beads or other small objects such as M&Ms, Skittles, Fruit Loops, Post-it notes…anything that you have 4 different colors of!
