Activity description:
DNA is a molecule inside the cells of all living things, including the ones we eat! In this session, you will use a simple procedure to extract DNA from strawberries. What does DNA look like? Is strawberry DNA structurally different from human DNA? Join us to find out! In this activity, you will:
- prepare ingredients for DNA extraction from household materials;
- extract DNA from a strawberry; and
- see real DNA without a microscope!
Material kits will be available for pick up at the DNALC in Cold Spring Harbor January 11-15, between 10:00am and 4:00 pm.
If you would like to have a kit shipped to your home, there will be an additional charge of $10. If you are using a DNALC kit, you will need to supply:
- Tap water
- 2-4 strawberries
- Measuring spoons (1 tbsp and 1 tsp)
If you choose not to get a DNALC kit, you can instead provide your own materials for the activity. You will need:
