Activity description:

DNA barcoding allows for the identification of an organism through analysis of a short region of DNA within its genome, similar to how the pattern of bars in a universal product code (UPC) identifies each consumer product. Follow Dr. Sharon Pepenella through this three-part series as she introduces you to the wet lab procedures behind isolating, amplifying, and sequencing a barcode region of an organism’s DNA to identify the species!

In this DNALC Live session, you will:

  • gain an understanding of the DNA barcoding process;
  • explore how DNA barcoding is used to tackle global issues like monitoring biodiversity and identifying food fraud;
  • observe the isolation of an organism’s DNA using a simple and rapid procedure.
