Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s (CSHL’s) Ludmila Pollock has been named a 2024 Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). She is recognized for her efforts to promote the history and philosophy of science.
Pollock has been head of the CSHL Library & Archives since 1999. In 2008, she founded CSHL’s History of Science Meetings. These meetings bring together scientists, historians, and other luminaries to share firsthand accounts of some of the greatest breakthroughs in biology and medicine. In 2000, Pollock initiated an oral history project through which she has since interviewed more than 170 pioneers of molecular biology, genetics, and biotechnology. She has led the CSHL Center for Humanities & History of Modern Biology since 2018 and was named the Robert David Lion Gardiner Chair of Library & Archives in 2024.
“I love what I do,” Pollock says. “It’s not important how many prizes I receive. But if such an important organization as AAAS recognizes you, it means you do really good work for researchers, scholars, students, and the public. That acknowledgment is a tremendous honor.”
Since 1874, the AAAS has recognized scientists, engineers, and innovators for their efforts to advance science in service to society. Pollock joins a long list of CSHL faculty members who have been named AAAS Fellows, including President and CEO Bruce Stillman, Director of Research Leemor Joshua-Tor, education program leaders David Stewart and Jan Witkowski, and Professors David Jackson and Nicholas Tonks.
