Lectures and concerts open to the public; benefit features Jourdan Urbach
Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) invites Long Islanders to participate in a public lecture and concert program that runs from March 13 through October 23, 2007. “Each year the CSHL Cultural Series shares the wonders of art and science with our neighbors,” explained CSHL President Bruce Stillman, “and the 2007 program is stellar.”
This year’s free lecture program topics range from poetry to cancer, Alzheimer’s, and the science of making healthier babies. The lectures are free, but due to overwhelming response, reservations are required.
A $100.00 Concert Subscription Pass will bring subscribers a mosaic of music from Chu-Fang Huang, Yousun Chung and Teddy Robie, The Parker String Quartet, Liza Ferschtman and Inon Barnatan, Wendy Warner and Irina Nuzova, Peter Orth, and Jean-Frederic Neuburger.
Additional highlights of the 2007 series include a photography exhibit by CSHL’s 2006 Photographer in Residence, Max S. Gerber. A professional editorial/commercial photographer who, for more than a decade has photographed the famous—Willy Nelson, Carly Simon, Rodney Dangerfield, and CSHL’s own Dr. James D. Watson, to name a few. The exhibition of Gerber’s photographs of CSHL opens July 13 with an appearance by the artist.
CSHL will host a benefit on September 30, 2007, featuring Jourdan Urbach, a fifteen-year-old violin prodigy, national concert artist, author, CSHL intern, and philanthropist from Roslyn who has already accomplished more than most people spend a lifetime achieving. He has performed and been interviewed on Good Morning America, CNN-Lou Dobbs Tonight, The Today Show, Inside Edition, and From the Top, and was also featured in Teen People Magazine in which he was chosen as one of the “Twenty Teens Who Will Change the World.” Tickets for the event are $75.00, with proceeds going to CSHL and the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research.

Chu-Fang Huang, piano
Pianist Chu-Fang Huang won the 2006 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, was a first prize winner of the 2005 Cleveland International Piano Competition and a finalist in the Twelfth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Texas.

Yousun Chung and Teddy Robie, oboe and piano
Oboist Yousun Chung studied at Juilliard from 2000–2006 with the Eileen Hayes Ludlam Memorial Scholarship and now holds a bachelor and master’s of music. She is currently continuing her studies at the Mannes School of Music for Professional Studies program in New York.
Pianist Teddy Robie is a Juilliard alumnus pursuing his master’s degree under the tutelage of Jerome Lowenthal and Yohaved Kaplinsky. He is a past recipient of the Gina Bachauer Scholarship, second prize winner in the 1999 Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition and has attended many renowned festivals including PianoFest in the Hamptons, Music Academy of the West, Yellow Barn, and Eastern Musical Festival.

The Parker String Quartet, violins, viola and cello
The Parker String Quartet was hailed by The Washington Post as “a quartet that propels the music irresistibly but with extraordinary grace and flexibility.” The dynamic young chamber ensemble has garnered top prizes at the 2005 Concert Artists Guild International Competition and the Bordeaux International String Quartet Competition.

Dr. Greg Hannon on Recent Progress in Cancer Research
Hannon is a leading cancer biologist and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator at CSHL. In this lecture, Hannon will describe the approaches that are now being taken to improve the way many forms of cancer are diagnosed and treated.

Liza Ferschtman and Inon Barnatan, violin and piano
Violinist Liza Ferschtman is considered one of the most gifted musicians of her generation living in The Netherlands today. Ms. Ferschtman most recently won the 2006 Dutch Music Award. This year, she succeeds Isabelle van Keulen as artistic director of the country’s most important chamber music festival in Delft and will release her second CD.
“Though there are too many fine performers to cite, special mention goes to the fearless young pianist Inon Barnatan,” exclaims The New York Times. Barnatan joined Lincoln Center’s prestigious “Chamber Music Society Two” for the 2006–08 season and is the founder member of the award-winning Fidelio Piano Quartet. This season, Mr. Barnatan makes his recital debut at the Metropolitan Museum, and returns to Concertgebouw and Lincoln Center.

Max S. Gerber, Photographer in Residence, Opening Reception Bush Auditorium
California native Max S. Gerber’s clients include: Time Magazine, Businessweek, L.A. Weekly, Los Angeles Magazine, L.A. Citybeat, Editor & Publisher, Marketing y Medios Magazine, Virgin Records, Rhino Records, and Universal Music Group. Chosen as CSHL’s 2006 Photographer in Residence, Max spent his week-long residency creatively capturing the faces behind the science. This exhibition opens July 13 with an appearance by the artist. (Exhibition runs July 13 – July 29; open daily from 9:00am – 5:00 pm)

Wendy Warner and Irina Nuzova, cello-piano duo
Wendy Warner and Irina Nuzova joined forces as a cello-piano duo, debuting at the Phillips Art Collection in Washington D.C., on October 1, 2006. Ms. Warner is foremost known for her remarkable performances as soloist-cellist with major orchestras, while Ms. Nuzova has been praised for her sensitive renditions in chamber works. The spirit of their collaboration is framed by a commitment to unaffected and profound musical expression of the cello-piano repertoire, both classical and contemporary, with a predilection for compositions according equivalent weight to the two instruments.

Avner Hershlag, Custom-made Babies: Fact or Fiction?
What can science do to eliminate genetic disease and help create healthier children? Dr. Avner Hershlag, Director of North Shore Hospital’s PGD (Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis) program will discuss what is currently done to identify genetic defects in the embryo while still in the dish. A Yale-trained Reproductive Endocrinologist and an Associate Professor of Ob/Gyn at NYU School of Medicine, Dr. Hershlag will discuss what’s new on the horizon and the ethical dilemmas associated with these techniques, such as sex selection, creating a tissue-matched baby for a sick sibling, and designer children.

Peter Orth, piano
Twenty-five years ago, Peter Orth won the First Prize in the Naumberg International Piano Competition held in memory of William Kapell, which catapulted him into the American musical mainstream. Since then, he has been heard as soloist with many of the world’s most distinguished orchestras and has collaborated with a list of conductors which reads like a Who’s Who of major maestri. In 2004, Mr. Orth was presented in recital by Steinway and Sons in New York City at which Peter Goodrich of Steinway awarded Mr. Orth with a gold medal in honor of Steinway’s 150th birthday.

Jourdan Urbach, violin concert & reception
Jourdan Urbach made his Lincoln Center Debut in 2003 as soloist with the Park Avenue Chamber Symphony followed by his Carnegie Hall debut two years later. Jourdan has been inducted into the Kids Hall of Fame and received numerous citations for his great humanitarian work with Children Helping Children (CHC), a musical charity of which he is the founder and director. “I plan to continue using my music as a medium for fundraising, and want to pursue a career in neurology and neuroscience,” says Jourdan. He interned at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for three years and is currently conducting research in myelin repair at Stony Brook University. He is also a student at The Juilliard School’s Pre-College Division. Proceeds to benefit CSHL and the Lustgarten Foundation for pancreatic cancer research. Jean-Frederic Neuburger, piano
The Washington Post praised French pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger as a “brilliantly polished and profoundly gifted young pianist.” Since receiving the Académie Maurice Ravel’s top accolade at the age of 15, he has been given numerous other awards, most recently First Prize at the 2006 Young Concert Artists International Auditions. His 2006 highlights include his debut with the Shanghai Philharmonic and the release of his second CD recording of Chopin works on the DiscAuvers label.

Dr. Robert Malinow, Understanding Alzheimer’s Disease
Malinow is Professor of Neuroscience at CSHL. In this lecture, he will describe the approaches that are now being taken to understand the brain, what goes wrong in a variety of diseases including Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and how researchers are working to improve the treatment of these and other brain disorders.
