Ever seen a shark run laps with a stack of stinky Agar plates?
For more than 30 years, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory’s (CSHL’s) annual Plate Race along Bungtown Road was a fierce competition between two teams—Chromatin, Epigenetics & Gene Expression (GeneX) and Yeast Genetics & Genomics (YGG). Today, it still is. But about a decade ago, a new challenger appeared on CSHL’s sandy shores—Imaging Structure & Function in the Nervous System. And they weren’t alone.
Alongside the rookie team was a fearsome predator of the deep, a toothy fiend fresh off an appearance at the CSHL Raft Race—a Hammerhead shark … costume. And so a tradition was born. At any given moment in the race, one Imaging team member dons the costume and becomes the shark.
