Take note of the rhythm of research

There are surprising sounds all around the campus—if you pay attention—from the flapping of goose wings, to the clicking of pipettes and the rattling of Petri dishes. In the fall of 2019, the Communications department invited a music composer, Christopher Marianetti of Found Sound Nation, to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory campus to capture interesting sounds and turn them into music. We have used his natural sound compositions in videos and audio products ever since.

In this video you will see how the sounds were recorded and how Marianetti used a specialized music composition system to make the notes he needed to compose some catchy tunes. We hope this film will open your ears to what an interesting soundscape a laboratory can be.
