Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) has named David Crotty executive director of its publishing house, CSHL Press. He takes over for John Inglis, who founded the modern-day incarnation of CSHL Press in 1987.
CSHL Press traces its roots to the 1933 publication of the first volume on CSHL’s Symposia on Quantitative Biology. Today, the publisher is home to eight scientific journals, including the flagship Genes & Development, and has over 200 titles in print, from lab manuals to children’s books. The publishing house was also the birthplace of the world’s leading biomedical preprint platforms, bioRxiv and medRxiv.
“CSHL Press has historically taken a leadership role in scholarly communication, from publishing the first molecular biology lab manual to the ongoing preprint revolution,” Crotty says. “John leaves enormous shoes to fill, but I am excited and honored by the opportunity to build on the Press’ successes and reputation for innovation, and to position it to thrive in the future.”
From 2001 to 2011, Crotty served as executive editor at CSHL Press, as well as editor-in-chief of the journal Cold Spring Harbor Protocols—a definitive source of technique-related reviews and laboratory protocols across the life sciences. Crotty’s impressive resume also includes a senior consultant position at boutique firm Clarke & Esposito and 10 years at Oxford University Press, as both senior editor and editorial director of journals policy. He holds a Ph.D. in Genetics and Development from Columbia University and completed postdoctoral research at the California Institute of Technology.
Crotty assumes the lead at CSHL Press effective December 1, 2025.
