The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) Bookstore, located in the basement of Grace Auditorium, first opened on campus in 1992. Its first manager, Connie Hallaran, has shepherded the store through several iterations, including its first four years operating under CSHL Press and five years as a campus bookstore run by Barnes & Noble. Hallaran still runs the bookstore, now owned and operated by the Laboratory under the auspices of the Meetings & Courses Program.
The shelves are filled with an eclectic mix of science books, including a large section for children. Books published by CSHL Press are front and center. “We have a nice selection of CSHL Press titles, manuals for our courses, as well as what I call a science layman section of popular science books, like The Code Breaker by Walter Isaacson and The Secret of Life about Rosalind Franklin,” says Hallaran. “Our Bookstore Gift Shop has much to offer, including a children’s section, science gifts, T-Shirts, and more.”
There is plenty of CSHL-branded merchandise, including sweatshirts (a top seller), T-shirts, baby clothes, hats, bags, and shot glasses. Another top seller? Key chains and plush toys shaped like famous microbes. And if you need a snack or forgot something like toothpaste or ibuprofen, the bookstore can help you out.
If you cannot make it to the physical store between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tuesday to Friday, try shopping online at cshlvirtualstore.com and CSHL Press.
