Many former CSHL faculty members, postdocs, graduate students, URPs (participants in the Lab’s Undergraduate Research Program), and other researchers have spent what they say are some of the best times of their scientific lives on Bungtown Road. In addition, CSHL welcomes nearly 1,000 visiting scientists to its campus each year to participate—as either instructors or students—in the Laboratory’s comprehensive program of postgraduate courses. Former faculty, postdocs, graduate students, URPs, and course participants frequently describe their time at CSHL as the first spark of their scientific imagination or as a vital source for ongoing intellectual inspiration and stimulation.
The Laboratory has decided to facilitate year-round, ongoing relationships with researchers from this large and enthusiastic alumni base. To that end, former CSHL faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, URPs, and course participants are now eligible for membership in a newly-formed Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Alumni Association. Terri Grodzicker, Assistant Director for Academic Affairs at CSHL, will be President of the Alumni Association, which has a newly-formed Board (see below) that will advise the Laboratory. The Alumni Association will provide a forum for alumni and current CSHL scientific staff to inform each other about their research, for the lab to share news about its research and educational programs, and for alumni to reestablish contact with each other.
“Cold Spring Harbor remains a scientific home away from home for those who have worked or studied at the lab. The Alumni Association was formed to help those who love the lab keep in touch with us, to foster relationships with new alumni, and to support the future development of the lab.”
— Terri Grozicker, President, CSHL Alumni Association
Other planned activities and benefits of membership include an annual on-campus scientific retreat, invitations to special events, and select CSHL Press book and journal discounts.
Annual membership proceeds (discounted for Junior Members who have earned a Ph.D. within the past five years) will support research and education programs at the Laboratory. This fall, CSHL Alumni will receive letters inviting them to join the Alumni Association. For more information, please contact Val Pakaluk (pakaluk@cshl.edu). To attend the first special event, those contemplating membership in the CSHL Alumni Association are encouraged to register now for a scientific meeting at CSHL celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the discovery of the double helix (“The Biology of DNA,” February 26 – March 2, 2003).
