CSHL Cancer Center - Animal & Tissue Imaging Facility

The Animal Imaging & Tissue Imaging Shared Resource provides both expertise and access to state-of-the-art non-invasive imaging modalities, tissue imaging, and pathology. This Resource allows researchers to visualize a broad range of tumor- associated parameters without invasive or terminal procedures, obtain high quality tissue sections, and access extensive pathology services. For more information, see below or contact the Resource Director, Lloyd Trotman.

Non-invasive in vivo imaging has become increasingly important in conducting research with cancer models, as it enables the researcher to visualize and measure a broad range of tumor-associated parameters without invasive or terminal procedures. This Shared Resource offers:

Animal Imaging Equipment

  • IVIS Spectrum Imager
  • Vevo 3100 Ultrasound
  • PET/ CT

The Animal and Tissue Imaging Shared Resource has the equipment and expertise to produce reliable high-quality sections from fixed and unfixed tissues, frozen and paraffin-embedded tissues. Procedures are available to quantify cellular apoptosis, angiogenesis, and cell proliferation. Tissue imaging services include:

  • Sample preparation: routine paraffin processing, embedding, sectioning, and staining with standard histological methods. Additional support is provided for special orientation of tissues, serial sections, bone decalcification and other procedures.
  • Staining services include H&E staining as well as a variety of stains to look at connective tissue, mucins, lipids, nucleic acids, amyloid, microorganisms and other proteins.
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • RNA CISH/FISH (chromogenic/fluorescence in situ hybridization) allows in situ detection, localization, and quantification of RNA at the sub-cellular level.
  • Aperio OS/Aperio FL scanners for high-resolution digital images with video conferencing capabilities.
  • The Laser Capture Microdissection microscope with automated sample preparation.
NCIlogo Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is an NCI-designated Cancer Center. As a basic research institution, CSHL does not treat patients. Information about individual cancers is available at the NCI CancerNet. Questions about CSHL's cancer research program should be directed to our Public Affairs Department.
