For the fifth consecutive year,
the philanthropic evaluator Charity Navigator has bestowed their
highest 4-star rating on Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for its
sound financial practices. This distinction ranks Cold Spring Harbor
Laboratory among the most responsible of more than 1.5 million
philanthropic organizations that exist in America to date.
“
We are happy to announce that Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has earned
its fifth consecutive 4-star rating for its ability to efficiently
allocate and grow its finances,” Trent Stamp, Executive Director
of Charity Navigator, wrote. “Less than 12% of the charities
we’ve rated have received at least two consecutive 4-star evaluations,
indicating that Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory outperforms most charities
in America in its efforts to operate in the most fiscally responsible
way possible. This ‘exceptional’ rating from Charity
Navigator differentiates Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory from its peers
and proves that it’s worthy of the public’s trust.”
Charity Navigator rates charities in comparison to others within
the same sector, to determine how a charity is functioning according
to industry standards. Financial data submitted annually is used
to analyze the institution’s actual performance based on seven
criteria: program expenses, administration expenses, fundraising
expense, fundraising efficiency, primary revenue grown and primary
expenses growth, and working capital ratio. In all industries, the
4-star rating indicates that the charity “exceeds industry
standards and outperforms most charities in its cause.” Fewer
than 600 out of the more than 5,000 charities ranked have attained
two consecutive 4-star ratings; this makes CSHL’s fifth
4-star rating.
“
We have always strived to maintain a sound approach to finances.
This designation makes it all the more rewarding for us,” Dill
Ayres, CSHL’s Chief Operating Officer, commented.
