The plant group at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is expanding upon the Nobel prize-winning work done here by Barbara McClintock in the 1940s and 50s. The transposable genetic elements, or "jumping genes," that she discovered are now being used at CSHL to isolate plant genes and to develop functional genomics databases in Arabidopsis and maize.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is part of global consortia of researchers involved in the comprehensive sequencing of the Arabidopsis and rice genomes. The complete sequence of Arabidopsis will be available by the end of the year and promises to be a landmark event in plant biology.
The Laboratory owns 12 acres of farmland nearby called Uplands Farm. Here, an expert staff raises maize and Arabidoposis plants for study.
