Graduate students may pursue a Ph.D. in the biological sciences at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory (CSHL) via: 1) the Watson School of Biological Sciences, or 2) a graduate program at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook.


For the first time in its history, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is a degree-granting educational institution. The Watson School of Biological Sciences received accreditation from the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York on behalf of the State Education Department on September 18, 1998. The Laboratory will enroll the first class of Ph.D. candidates to begin studies in September 1999.

Graduate students can perform their doctoral research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory through several departments or graduate programs at State University of New York (SUNY) Stony Brook. Graduate students take courses at SUNY Stony Brook and do their thesis research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory under the direction of a CSHL staff scientist who is associated with the particular SUNY department or graduate program.
