For more than 20 years, graduate students at the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook have come to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for their doctoral research. Laboratory faculty have advised students involved in the Genetics, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Molecular Genetics and Microbiology, and Neurobiology and Behavior graduate programs at SUNY Stony Brook. Today, approximately 50 Ph.D. and M.D.-Ph.D. students from these SUNY Stony Brook graduate programs study at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. The collaborative programs allow students to work with scientists from SUNY Stony Brook, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, and Brookhaven National Laboratory in their areas of specialization. Students in these shared programs perform their course work at SUNY Stony Brook and may perform laboratory rotations and doctoral research at any of the three institutions. Students who choose to study at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory participate in the weekly graduate student seminar series and the other seminar programs, irrespective of their degree program.

The SUNY Stony Brook graduate programs that collaborate with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory are described below. Most faculty at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory participate in more than one program. For more information about each program, we encourage students to visit the Web sites listed.

Genetics. The Genetics Program is a tri-institutional graduate program with approximately 70 faculty members from SUNY Stony Brook, Brookhaven National Laboratory, and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. It includes the largest number of faculty from Brookhaven National Laboratory and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory of all the shared graduate programs. Faculty interests vary widely and include classical, developmental, and molecular genetics, as well as genomics and evolution. For more information, see the Web site at http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/gen.

Molecular and Cellular Biology. The interdepartmental Molecular and Cellular Biology Program is the largest biomedical graduate program at SUNY Stony Brook, with 100 faculty members. Twelve faculty from Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory participate in this program. The research interests of faculty include biochemistry, biophysics, microbiology, pharmacology, and structural biology. For more information, see the Web site at http://life.bio.sunysb.edu/mcb.

Molecular Genetics and Microbiology. The Department of Molecular Genetics and Microbiology at SUNY Stony Brook supports its own graduate program, in which several Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory faculty participate. For more information, see http://www.uhmc.sunysb.edu/microbiology on the Web.

Neurobiology and Behavior. The Department of Neurobiology and Behavior at SUNY Stony Brook recently invited the neurobiology faculty at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory to participate in this program. Collectively, the SUNY Stony Brook and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory neurobiologists represent a wide range of research interests. For more information, see http://www.neurobio.sunysb.edu on the Web.
