The Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Fellow program provides an excellent opportunity for highly motivated individuals who want to pursue a period of independent research before taking a faculty position. The program is open to outstanding young scientists who have recently received their Ph.D. or M.D. degrees.

Fellows direct their own research program under the guidance of a senior faculty member. They have their own laboratory space and technician, as well as access to all of the resources of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Fellowship appointments are for three years with the possibility of an extension of one-two years for exceptional Fellows.

Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is proud of its rich tradition in training and nurturing young scientists and has a deep commitment to their success, as can be measured by our distinguished alumni and current fellows.

The Laboratory is internationally known for its highly interactive and stimulating environment. The Fellow program has been much valued for providing the opportunity to establish strong independent research programs without administrative burdens, as well as the opportunity to establish valuable collaborations.

Funding from the National Cancer Institute supports Shared Research Resources at the Lab, which provide access to state-of-the-art technology and equipment. These resources include microarray, 2D gel, monoclonal antibody, flow cytometry, and microscopy, an animal research facility including gene targeting and transgenic mouse services, as well as the latest nucleic acid and protein chemistry expertise. An Information Technology Department provides computer support and the Graphic Arts Department assists in the preparation of artwork for publications and presentations.

Our Meetings and Courses program brings over 8000 scientists to our campus each year, presenting Fellows with the opportunity to hear the latest research findings in a wide range of fields. The ability to meet with these visiting scientists offers a unique opportunity for Fellows to broaden their scientific knowledge and to network.

How to apply:
Graduate student advisors are encouraged to make nominations during the student’s final year of graduate studies, or graduate students may apply directly by sending a letter of introduction, along with curriculum vitae and the names of four individuals who can provide letters of recommendation.
