Lab Announces Women's Cancer Gene Initiative

On September 23, New York State Congressman Steve Israel and CSHL director Bruce Stillman announced Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's new Women's Cancer Gene Initiative. Leaders of Long Island breast cancer advocacy groups and members of Congressman Israel's Breast Cancer Task Force were briefed about the Laboratory's breast and ovarian cancer research. The announcement was made at CSHL's Genome Research Center in Woodbury, New York, which will house the new Center for Women's Genetics. The Women's Cancer Gene Initiative seeks to uncover novel cancer genes by using information stemming from the completion of the Human Genome Project.

"Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory is at the forefront of the fight against cancers that target women," Israel said. "Dr. Stillman and his colleagues are doing everything they can to find effective new treatments for this disease. I want to ensure that these scientists are getting all the support they need from the government."

U.S. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton visited the Genome Research Center on October 23 to lend her support to the Women's Cancer Gene Initiative. Senator Clinton's visit was particularly significant because she had the opportunity to hear from individual CSHL scientists about their work, and to tell them how she plans to ensure that the federal government provides them the resources necessary for them to expand their fight against cancer. The presence of many breast cancer advocacy groups at the October 23 event—as well as the stirring remarks of Senator Clinton, James Watson (CSHL President), and Scott Lowe (Deputy Director of the CSHL Cancer Center)—made for an inspiring launch of the Women's Cancer Gene Initiative. Carolyn McCarthy and Pete King, members of the U.S. House of Representatives, visited CSHL privately in 2002 to support the initiative.
