Professor for a Day
Our DNA Learning Center (DNALC) is the world's first science center devoted entirely to public genetics education. Programs include:

- Class field trips with hands-on laboratory experiments, interactive computer experiences, the museum exhibition "The Genes We Share," and multimedia presentations in the auditorium.
- Student summer day camps consisting of week-long genetics workshops for students from middle school through high school.
- Teacher Training Workshops and Fellowships for secondary and college faculty, which are held at DNALC sites and at host institutions throughout the country.
- School District Membership Programs for local school districts, which provide benefits such as preferred workshop placement, discounted field trips, and invitations to scientific lectures.
- "Saturday DNA!" classes, which provide fun learning experiences for the public.

The program is open to high school students entering their senior year who are nominated by their school science chairperson. Each science chairperson may nominate three students during their junior year. Nomination forms are sent in early February to all Long Island high school science chairpersons only. There is no application form and no preliminary information that is sent directly to students or parents. All nominations are due by late March (exact date is noted on forms).
Semi-finalists are interviewed by Laboratory scientists and winners go on to spend a minimum of 10 hours per week, September through March of their senior year, doing original research under the watchful eye of a scientist mentor.
At the conclusion of the program, students give oral presentations of their research projects to an enthusiastic audience of the students' scientific mentors, Lab administrators, parents and teachers.
While the students learn a great deal about molecular biology and state-of-the-art research techniques, the main advantage of the program is in exposing the students to day-to-day life in a working lab. Debunking the mythical scientist-in-a-labcoat image, the students are introduced to a world of relatively young scientists and their interactive support staff in a relaxed, problem-solving atmosphere.
The program shows students what science involves outside the laboratory, in particular how scientists communicate their work and subject it to peer review. In a structured group setting, students attend talks and a poster session at one of the many scientific meetings hosted each year by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. While participating in top science fairs may give students a taste of what a career in science is like, participating in "Professor For a Day" will offer a genuine sense of how the scientific community operates.
High school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with strong interests in science and research are eligible to apply for the program. No prior knowledge about the meeting topics is required. The program runs up to six times per year (three in the fall and three in the spring), and applications are due a minimum of three weeks before each program date.
