Description
The Radiation Shared Resource at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory provides facilities and services for the use of ionizing radiation. This Shared Resource provides (i) training and refresher courses for proper use of all radioactive materials and (ii) training and oversight of specialized equipment such as the gamma irradiator..

Equipment and Services:
New employee training
All laboratory personnel receive a two-hour orientation. This course describes different types of radiation, proper shielding, methods of controlling radiation dose and exposures, use of radiation detection instrumentation, rules for the safe use of radioactive materials, proper waste disposal and spill response procedures.

Annual Radiation Refresher Training
A 30-minute radiation safety refresher course is given every year to review basic principles and safety concepts, and to present updates on any new issues or regulations regarding use of radioactive materials.

Gamma Irradiator Training
Any investigator planning to use the Gamma Irradiator Facility must receive training in its use. This training is given on a one-on-one basis, and takes approximately one hour. Investigators are given round-the-clock access to the facility once training is completed.

Gamma Irradiator Facility
The irradiator is an essential tool for specialized applications such as irradiation of nude mice for xenograft experiments, irradiation of mice for adoptive transfer experiments, generation of mitotically inactive fibroblast for culturing embryonic stem cells for gene targeting applications, and for investigating DNA damage response pathways in cultured cells and in tumors.
