Cancer Center Renewal
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) created a network of NCI-designated "Cancer
Centers" to spearhead its efforts as the Nation’s leading agency
that supports cancer research. In 1987, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory was approved
to become a NCI-designated Cancer Center to allow expansion of the highly successful
cancer research program initiated by Jim Watson when he came to Cold Spring
Harbor in 1968. Since then, the CSHL Cancer Center has been one of the leading
cancer research centers in the U.S. The large NCI grant has to be renewed every
five years and I am happy to report that the CSHL Cancer Center was reviewed
again this year and approved for another five years of funding. The review
characterized virtually all aspects of our Cancer Center as either "outstanding" or "excellent" and
yielded the grant's highest ever priority score. For their efforts in this
vital grant application process, I wish to acknowledge the enormous amount
of effort from Scott Lowe (Professor and Deputy Director, CSHL Cancer Center),
Denise Roberts (Deputy Director of Administration) and her assistant Denise
Moller, together with the Program Leaders Greg Hannon, Nick Tonks and David
Spector. I also thank Peter Sherwood (Director of Research Communications)
who assisted with the writing of the introduction and the many Cancer Center
members and staff who contributed to this successful grant renewal.
