The Office of Technology Transfer functions as an administrative arm of the Lab. As such, it exists to provide valuable services to the Lab's Scientific Staff. Receiving its mandate from the CSHL Commercial Relations Policy, the office coordinates all Technology Transfer Activities. Below are a few of the basic functions we perform:

Generate Agreements

We generate agreements with corporate sponsors and licensees which fulfill CSHL's obligation to commercialize technologies, protect the rights of CSHL and its co-inventors and provide operating capital in the form of royalties, facility support payments and legal fee reimbursements. Agreements made with not-for-profit organizations protect the Lab and its employees from potential liabilities that could arise in the management of shared facilities or during the transfer or use of scientific materials (see Material Transfer Agreement ).

Coordinate corporate funding

We ensure that funds provided by corporate sponsors and licensees for the development and commercialization of CSHL technologies are backed by collaborative research and license agreements that protect the rights of CSHL and its co-inventors. We also ensure that such funds are properly allocated to CSHL departments and scientists.

Manage intellectual property rights

We work with CSHL scientists and patent law firms to ensure that CSHL intellectual property is afforded appropriate, complete legal protection both in the United States and abroad. Patent protection is one of the most frequent methods employed in furtherance of this goal.

    • The Office of Technology Transfer currently manages 76 patented technologies and 127 non-patented technologies.
    • CSHL has received 76 issued patents and has 66 pending patent applications from the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) covering inventions and discoveries made by 42 different CSHL Investigators.
    • The Office of Technology Transfer has granted 217 non-exclusive licenses and 32 exclusive licenses to companies interested in further developing and/or distributing CSHL technologies.
    • The Office of Technology Transfer regularly assists CSHL scientists by negotiating Sponsored Research Agreements, Material Transfer Agreements, Confidentiality Agreements, and Consulting Agreements that help individual laboratories secure funding and protect intellectual property.
